The British sportsman was in Ontario with his Los Angeles Galaxy teammates for a match against Toronto FC, but the game was marred when a rival fan hurled the can.

Beckham, who was waiting to take a corner kick when the incident happened, was seen picking up the empty can and shaking it at the crowd.

After the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, he slammed the person responsible for the incident, saying, “Tonight was a great atmosphere. The majority were here to enjoy the spectacle. It’s a shame some people spoiled it. It’s disappointing kids see it… but it was a great atmosphere.” / sfgate.com

Hamm slams Hilton and Kardashian

Actor Jon Hamm has accused Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton of making “stupidity” fashionable.

The Mad Men star is dismayed at the dumbing-down of celebrity culture in recent years, insisting being a “f**king idiot” is almost a guarantee of success.

And he’s singled out hotel heiress Hilton and reality TV star Kardashian as emblematic of the problem.

Hamm tells Elle magazine, “We’re at a place where the idea of being ‘elite’ is somehow considered a negative. Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated.

“Being a f**king idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly. And incuriousness has become cool… It’s celebrated. It doesn’t make sense to me.” / http://web.orange.co.uk/article/news/hamm_slams_hilton_and_kardashian

Dion buys deli in Canada

Celine Dion and her husband Rene Angelil have become the proud owners of a popular sandwich shop in Montreal, Canada.

The famous couple formed part of a consortium of investors who were behind the purchase of the famous Schwartz’s Deli, which has been selling sandwiches in the city since 1928.

The sale price was reportedly £6.3 million and Angelil, who has been visiting the deli since since 1961, insists he will do everything he can to uphold the firm’s traditional values.

He says in a statement, “It’s the most unique restaurant in the world and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. Of course, we’ll make a few improvements as necessary, but we’re not interested in diluting the brand by franchising, or making the deli something that it isn’t.”\

Pregnant woman eats local newspaper

Eating paper /Rex

A pregnant woman has told how she has developed a “bizarre craving” for eating her local newspaper.

Ann Curran, 35, of Dundee, munches her way through copies of the Dundee Evening Telegraph.

She says it is the only “only newsprint with the proper flavour” and that she “stashes shredded copies in her handbag for emergency snacks”.

Ms Curran said: “I could be sitting in the bingo hall and I’ll start ripping out pages of the newspaper.

“All the people look at me going, ‘What is she doing?’. I tear the white bits off the edges of the pages and keep them in a bag so I can eat them while I’m shopping.”

The Sunday Sun reports that she stocks up on copies of the paper during the week so she has enough to eat at the weekends.

She added: “If you shredded up lots of different bits of paper, I would know exactly which one was the Evening Telegraph.

“My pals keep papers for me but I have to buy a couple of extras to get me through the weekend.”

Woman falls for Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty /PA

A Leeds woman who is attracted to inanimate objects says she has found true love – with the Statue of Liberty.

Amanda Whittaker, 27, says she has fallen head over heels for the New York monument, reports The Sun.

Ms Whittaker, who had a love affair with a drum kit while still at school, said: “She is my long-distance lover and I am blown away by how stunning she is.”

The shop assistant has a condition called objectum sexuality, in which people fall in love with things rather than humans.

She first fell for “Libby”, as she calls the statue, when a pal in New York posted her a picture online.

Since then she has visited the 151ft statue in person four times, caressing it and leaning out of a window to kiss its hair.

She has even thought about marrying it – but decided against it “because so many others love her too”.

Instead she has settled for a shrine to Libby in her home featuring a 6ft replica, hundreds of smaller models and ornaments and huge US flags.

She said: “Other people might be shocked to think I can have romantic feelings for an object, but I am not the same as them.”

‘Dead’ woman climbs out of coffin

Li Xiufeng /Quirky China News

A 95-year-old grandmother terrified her neighbours in China – by climbing out of her coffin six days after she ‘died’

Li Xiufeng was found motionless and not breathing in bed by her neighbour more than a fortnight after tripping and suffering a head injury.

When he failed to wake her up, Chen Qingwang assumed the frail grandmother had passed away in her sleep, in the village of Liulou, in Beiliu, Guangxi Province.

Recounting his daily visit to bring the elderly lady breakfast, Mr Qingwang, 60, said: “”She didn’t get up, so I came up to wake her up.

“No matter how hard I pushed her and called her name, she had no reactions. I felt something was wrong, so I tried her breath, and she has gone, but her body is still not cold.”

According to tradition, the ‘dead’ woman was laid in her coffin ahead of the funeral for friends and relatives to pay their respects.

But the day before the funeral, Mr Qingwang arrived at his neighbour’s house to find the coffin empty and the corpse gone.

“We were so terrified, and immediately asked the neighbours to come for help,” he said.

After searching for the missing body, the villagers were stunned to find Mrs Xiufeng sitting on a stool in her kitchen cooking.

She reportedly told villagers: “I slept for a long time. After waking up, I felt so hungry, and wanted to cook something to eat. I pushed the lid for a long time to climb out.”

A county hospital reportedly believes Mrs Xiufeng suffered an artificial death, during which the person has no breath, but the body remains warm.

Robber returned to bank for cab fare

Taxi /PA

A would-be bank robber was arrested in the US – after returning to the scene of his crime to withdraw cash for taxi fare.

The 39-year-old man had tried to rob a Wells Fargo bank in Chamblee, Georgia, at gunpoint.

He handed the cashier a note saying: “Give me the money or we start shooting”, reports Newser.

“Obviously, feeling safe behind the bulletproof glass, the teller just stepped back and the individual left without any money,” said Chamblee Police Chief Marc Johnson.

The man jumped into a taxi to make his getaway back to his car parked nearby where he realised he didn’t have any money for the fare.

Fearing he intended driving off without paying, the female taxi driver blocked in his car and got the attention of a police officer.

“The officer just convinced the guy that you need to get some money and pay your bill or else you’ll end up in trouble,” Police Chief Johnson added.

The policeman escorted him back to the same bank to withdraw cash legally where bank employees recognised him. The man was arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery.

Dog dresses up hip-hop style

Rocky /Rex

A New York woman has become something of a local celebrity for dressing her pet dog in hip hop fashions.

Fashion designer Ji Kim, 26, brought a child-sized Adidas tracksuit and customised it to fit four-year-old Maltese, Rocky.

And the pair, who often wear matching tracksuits, have caused a viral sensation – even being featured on the Adidas design team’s Facebook page.

She said: “Rocky loves attention and when she wears this tracksuit she gets lots of it. She gets very excited when I dress her in it.

“Also Rocky is a very small dog and doesn’t have as much fur as other dogs so she gets cold very quickly – this tracksuit keeps her warm during the winter months.”

Women who have just finished ovulating ‘are best at spotting snakes’

Women who have just finished ovulating are better at detecting snakes than at other times of their menstrual cycle, according to an unusual study that sheds light on inbuilt reflexes for survival.

According to a recent study, women who have just finished ovulating are better at detecting snakes than at other times of their menstrual cycle Photo: ALAMY

Nobuo Masataka of Japan’s Kyoto University tested 60 healthy women of child-bearing age at three different phases of their cycle.

They were simultaneously shown nine pictures, one of which was a snake among flowers while the others were only of flowers.

The volunteers were tested on how quickly they spotted the serpent.

The fastest women were those who were in the so-called luteal phase of their menstrual cycle, or the stage that immediately follows ovulation.

The study strengthens theories that we have a “fear reflex,” or an innate response to threat signals such as potentially poisonous snakes, Masataka believes.

Previous research has found this trait among infants aged as young as eight months and even among non-human primates.

Among women, the reflex seems to be influenced by hormone levels at a stage when they could be pregnant and thus be more protective towards their foetus, the study suggests.

“It could contribute to women’s ability to increase their vigilance towards biologically relevant threatening stimuli around themselves during this period of possible pregnancy,” it says.

The paper was published on Thursday in the British journal Scientific Reports. / telegraph / Source: AFP
