Celebrating The Jazz Legend Nat King Cole with Yannick Bovy

GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS: CELEBRATING THE JAZZ LEGENDYannick Bovy channels the soul of Nat King ColeNat King Cole rose to prominence at an early age, starting out as a jazz pianist. This African-American’s soft baritone voice captured the attention of people around him and eventually emerged as a popular solo performer with hits like “Unforgettable” and “Mona Lisa”.Despite his untimely demise in the 1960s, Nat King Cole’s music is still favoured by many today. Yannick Bovy, believes that Nat King Cole has paved his way as one of the most influential black artists in American Music History and especially in Jazz music. When Bovy was first approached to perform in the ‘Nat King Cole 100’ show in December 2018, it was a way to pay tribute to the legendary jazz artist. He told me: ‘if there is anyone who can sing this song in English with the passion it needs, it’s you” What a great honour it is for me and a pleasure, because “The Soul Of Nat King Cole” is such an amazing song to sing,” adds Bovy.“His music and lyrics were universal and had beautiful messages of love and life. They are all still very meaningful today. As an artist, Nat King Cole has been a great role model for the swing- jazz artists of today,” shares Bovy. He also believes that as music becomes more global because of our digital world, you’ll start to notice that different music styles influence one another, which makes this a very exciting time for everyone who performs and loves music. He adds, “Although I’ve known of Nat King Cole’s repertoire since I was a teenager, I discovered ‘The Rules Of The Road’, VRT Big Band suggested to do for the show in 2018. To me, the song had a fantastic arrangement, lyric, and melody, but most importantly, it had a message about life and love, where you live and learn.Bovy will be channeling Nat King Cole this October as he covers fourteen Nat King Cole’s songs in Yannick Bovy Celebrates 100 Years of Nat King Cole. The European Union Film Festival is back!

A cinematic journey through Europe with 19 award-winning filmsThe European Union Film Festival (EUFF) returns once more to selected Golden Screen Cinemas. Celebrating its 20thanniversary in Malaysia, The EUFF remains one of the most anticipated international film festivals in the country. This year, a more focused programme promises to showcase the dynamism, breadth and innovation of contemporary European cinema, as well as the cultural diversity of Europe, with critically-acclaimed films from across the continent. The European Union Film Festival will take place at selected Golden Screen Cinemas outlets in Kuala Lumpur (17 – 27 October) – GSC Mid Valley, GSC Pavilion KL, GSC 1 Utama - and Penang (31 October - 6 November) – GSC Gurney Plaza.Since its first edition in 2000, the EUFF has brought together film enthusiasts, students, families and even people looking for their first foreign-language film experience.  Spanning animation, drama, romance, comedy, adventure, family films and documentaries, the wide ranging programme is a testament to Europe's continued creativity and diversity and has something for everyone's tastes."Europe has never been just one, but many cultures, languages and lifestyles. Through EUFF, we celebrate our cultural diversity. We put culture at the centre of our international partnerships around the world, including with Malaysia," said H.E. Maria Castillo Fernandez, Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Malaysia."We hope that these films not only entertain, inspire and teach us about European culture but also open people's eyes to how both European and Malaysian people enjoy cultural diversity," she added. From left, Mr Matthias Vanheusden (Charge d’Affaires a.i, Embassy of Belgium to Malaysia), H.E. Mr Kreso Glavac (Ambassador of Croatia to Malaysia), H.E. Mr Frederic Laplanche (Ambassador of France to Malaysia), H.E. Maria Castillo Fernandez (Ambassador, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia), H.E. Mrs Gunn Jorid Roset (Ambassador of Norway to Malaysia), Mr Maciej Tumulec (Charge d’Affaires a.i, Embassy of Poland to Malaysia)The 19 award-winning films this year come from 15 European countries. The festival line-up also features films from non-European Union countries Switzerland and Norway. Most of the films are collaborations or joint-productions between European countries and many are courtesy of a project by the European Commission managed by a Consortium formed by Goethe-Institut (lead), Institut Français and Cineuropa, the portal for the promotion of the European cinema. These films bring to life the fact that Europe, just like Malaysia, is united in our diversity and highlight that story-telling and art have no barriers across cultures and countries. This year, Romania's inspirational feature film, Beside Me, will open the film festival with a heart-breaking story that explores the idea of human connectivity. THE NORTH FACE: The Classic ICON Collection Reintroduced

Inspired by Mountains, Dressed for StreetsEver since its establishment in 1966, The North Face has been devoted to bringing the best apparel and gear to athletes and explorers — offering full and best protection for all types of outdoor adventures. Since the 1980s, the ICON collection was created to serve the needs of expeditions in the harshest regions of the world. Today, these products and styles still boast utmost technical functionality but have been adopted by top trendsetters, who have helped make them much-loved icons of American street culture. To celebrate the heritage of TNF’s ICON collection, Malaysia has released the reintroduced styles of the: 1990 Mountain Jacket, 1996 Retro Nuptse Jacket, 1995 Retro Denali Jacket and 1978 Base Camp Duffel on 13 September 2019 — and hopes to reach out to all urban adventurers who can explore wherever and whenever they want, through music, art and culture.1990 MOUNTAIN JACKET GTX II From mountain summits to the city streets, the reintroduced 1990 Mountain Jacket is an enhanced replica of our original version from 1990. Bold, iconic blocking in red, yellow and blue are now a distinct visual identity that has become popular among today’s street-fashion lovers.First introduced as part of an alpine system to protect climbers and mountaineers from extreme elements, the Mountain Jacket has become a standard for durable protective outerwear. This heavy-duty veteran is incredibly weatherproof and has been tested by our athletes in many hostile environments over the years, including Himalayan and polar expeditions. This retro-styled jacket is made of waterproof materials and mixed with silk taffeta and brushed tricot drop-lining to achieve a combined performance of breathability and warmth. The VISLON zipper belt is a double-layer windbreaker with snap closure, providing windproof support for outdoor activities.1995 RETRO DENALI JACKETSince it was first introduced in 1988, as a zip-in fleece to the Mountain Jacket, worn by pioneers Todd Skinner and Paul Piana on their first free ascent of the Salathé Wall in Yosemite, the Denali Jacket completely revolutionized technical fleece. Perhaps no single piece of apparel represents authentic outdoor culture more completely than the Denali. Its iconic blocking and bold styling have since made it one of the most recognizable and coveted fleece jackets ever. Since the 2000s, the Denali has been adopted as the campus uniform across America.Today, the 1995 Retro Denali Jacket follows the original iconic blocking and color designs, with woven overlays on the collar, chest and back of yoke and sleeves; and is compatible with the Mountain Jacket. The fleece fabric and the underarm gussets with pit-zip venting help to resist wind while maximizing breathability. With the VISLON® center front and hand-pocket zips, two secure-zip chest pockets and the woven hem with adjustable bungee cinch, outdoor trips and daily adventures are both comfortable and carefree.1996 RETRO NUPTSE JACKETSince it was first introduced in 1992, the Nuptse Jacket quickly became a part of every expedition around the world. Together with devoted outdoor travelers, the Nuptse Jacket witnessed some of the most challenging routes to be discovered and explored. In the golden age of the 1990s, New York’s booming street culture had become a new source of inspiration for the Nuptse Jacket. The excellent thermal performance and retro style was widely loved by trendsetters, while the hip-hop community made it a style statement.Today, built for mountain- and city-life to keep you warm and dry when it gets cold and wet, the Nuptse Jacket’s signatures include its boxy silhouette, original shiny ripstop fabric, iconic oversized panels, stowable hood and 700- fill goose down insulation.1978 BASE CAMP DUFFELThe legendary Base Camp Duffel was originally designed in 1978 as hardwearing, soft luggage crafted from vinyl laminated fabric. It was equipped to be hauled by porters, yaks and camels to every region of the world. With its iconic handles introduced in 1989 and its classic D-zip opening added in 1996, this Duffel easily became cemented on every expedition checklist.Today, the 1978 Base Camp Duffel is made from wear-resistant ballistic nylon. The bag’s 50-litre-volume body is equipped with improved detachable, adjustable, alpine-cut shoulder straps and a thick carry-bag handle, while a more ergonomic design minimizes contortions. The side-zip pockets are designed to store handy belongings such as a mobile phone and wallet; while the D-zip opening has a weather-resistant zipper flap; and the end-cap zippered compartment can store wet clothes, dirty shoes or extra gear without sacrificing volume. The classic ICON collection is exclusively available in :1.
